Giraffes in African Art
Giraffes in Groups, Pairs and Occasional Singles
Giraffes, like many grazing animals, are found in the wild areas of southern Africa in herds. Giraffe carvings are generally seen depicting groups and these are usually carved from Serpentine stone. We reckon that the reason for carving giraffes using Serpentine rather than Rapoko, used to carve other animals, is that the long necks and legs of giraffe groupings are more substantial when using a harder stone.
